246 F1 M. HAWTHORN MOROCCO GP 1958

Tested in October 1957 by Peter Collins at the Modena Aeroautodrome, this car’s engine offered a nice balance between a 4-cylinder and the 8-cylinder designed by Vittorio Jano. Following the great success in Formula 2 with Dino 156 F2 the car named for Ferrari’s first son served as the basis for 1958’s Ferrari 246 F1. With this car Mike Hawthorn won the GP of France. Over 10 races, Hawthorn had only this victory—at Reims in France, but his five seconds and one third place were enough to snare the championship by one point over fellow Brit, Stirling Moss, who had four victories driving the Cooper-Climax and Vanwall cars.
