Rather than a further development of the 312 B, this was practically a new car featuring an engine with shorter stroke, allowing it to increase power at higher revs. Throughout the 1971 season Ferrari entered three drivers: Jacky Ickx, Clay Regazzoni and Mario Andretti. The drivers switched back and forth between the 312 B and 312 B2 and recorded some very good qualifying results, but rarely finished a race.

Again in the hands of Ickx, Regazzoni and on some occasions Andretti, it did not fare much better. Andretti finished 4^th in the Germany GP. The model in 1:43 scale is a winner though
